Newmarket Academy believes that every student should have an excellent education and we have the highest expectations for all, regardless of background or barriers for learning. All students at Newmarket Academy should have the opportunity to achieve the best possible start to life. We are committed to working together to smash through the barriers that prevent our children from becoming confident, high achieving and independent individuals.
The Pupil Premium is funding provided to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on-roll who are eligible for free school meals (FSM), a smaller amount allocated according to the number of children of service families, and an allocation for each student who has been ‘Looked After’ (in care) for 6 months or more. In 2012, funding was extended to include students who have been eligible for free school meals within the past 6 years. The Pupil Premium grant supports improved attainment, raised expectations and readiness for life and learning.
It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual students within their responsibility. However, schools are to be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. From September 2012, this information must be published on the school website.
In order to ensure the best possible provision for pupil premium and all students, we have recruited more outstanding teachers and made specific curriculum changes so that all pupils can access a curriculum that leads to success. We have extra-curricular interventions so that students are supported before and after the official curriculum hours. We have a highly developed CPD programme so that staff are able to share strategies that support and extend specific groups of learners. Our assessment system makes sure that interventions are early and are more effective when gaps begin to emerge.

Applying for Free School Meals
If you think your child is eligible to benefit from this funding and to receive Free School Meals please apply directly via the Suffolk County Council website.
FAQ’s
Your child will get free school meals if you receive any of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit but no element of Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenues & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
- If you are supported under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Working Tax Credit during the four-week period immediately after your employment finishes or after you start to work fewer hours per week
- Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400 (£616.67 per month), as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods).

If you have not been allocated a school place for your child yet, please wait for confirmation of this place before you apply for free school meals.
If your child is eligible for and has been registered to receive free school meals between 1 April 2018 and the end of the rollout of Universal Credits (currently expected to be March 2024), they will remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary) they are in at the end of Universal Credits rollout. This is regardless of any change to your circumstances.
