INTENT
We aim to improve the reading, writing and speaking skills of every student at Newmarket Academy so that all may fulfil their potential throughout their five years in our department. This will be done by teaching a rich, diverse and challenging curriculum which emphasises the importance of learning through talk, reading aloud, explicitly taught vocabulary, and the metacognitive development of reading and writing as a result of regular practice and feedback.
Our revised and updated Key Stage 3 curriculum aims to equip all students with the literary and linguistic knowledge and skills they will need during their time at the academy and beyond.
Our ongoing, re-organised Key Stage 4 curriculum is a rigorous and pragmatic response to the prevailing GCSE exam requirements, ensuring students are expertly prepared for the next stage in their vocational training or academic education.
Our ambitious curriculum comprises carefully chosen novels, poems, plays, screenplays, and non-fiction extracts and articles which create opportunities to appreciate modern, multi-cultural life in Britain within a historical and global context. We hope our curriculum will sow the seeds of cultural capital and engender a life-long legacy of empathy and tolerance, so that our students become responsible citizens, at least partly because of the powerful, progressive values embodied within our three overarching concepts at KS3: power, alienation and conflict. Our exploration of canonical and contemporary texts will focus on themes such as privilege, disadvantage, prejudice, gender, race, love, and war.
